When buying a used car, it is important that you choose a dealer you feel you can trust and feel comfortable doing business with.

Statistics have shown that the average used car buyer spends up to 11 hours online researching the car they want to buy – but how long do they spend looking at who and where to buy it from?

My Car Credit take a look at five important factors to consider when choosing the right used car dealer:

Does the dealer have a strong online presence?

A good website will provide key information to you as the buyer. Take a good look around the website, is it easy to browse? does it reflect the dealer’s brand as established and reputable? Are the images of the cars clear? Is there a detailed list of features and specifications for each car?

Social media platforms will also allow you to gauge an understanding of customer service levels and view interaction between staff and customers.

Have you read the dealer’s reviews?

Reviews can provide a feel for the overall quality of the dealership as well as providing valuable insight into previous customer’s experiences. The fact the dealer is comfortable asking for reviews indicates they are passionate and confident about customer service.

Reviews can often be found on a dealer’s website, failing that try typing the dealers name into a search engine followed by the word ‘reviews’.

How long has the dealer been trading for?

Selling used cars can be a tough business, many used car dealers come and go. Think about if you experience any issues with your car and it was under warranty, would you expect the dealer to still be trading in 12 months’ time? It is usually safer to choose a well established used car dealership that has been trading for many years.

Is the dealer a member of any industry recognised associations?

All reputable dealers should display a trade association member logo.

Examples of associations to look out for are (FCA) ‘Financial Conduct Authority, ‘Institute of the Motor Industry’ or ‘Retail Motor Industry Federation’.

What aftercare would be available to you?

Does the dealer provide good aftercare services that you may require in the future? For example car servicing, MOT and car repairs.
