What is heycar – And Should I Use Them?

heycar advert

Does the thought of spending the weekend hopping between used car dealerships and navigating hard sales tactics put you off buying a new vehicle? Not to worry. There’s a better option!

Designed to make shopping for used cars as easy and stress-free as possible, heycar does away with traditional bricks-and-mortar yards and gives you access to thousands of used vehicle listings at your fingertips. What is heycar? It’s essentially an online marketplace for second-hand vehicles.

Wondering “who are heycar”? Want to know what they’re all about? Read on as we answer all your questions about heycar, how they operate and why they’re the used car platform of choice for motorists across the UK.

A short history of heycar

heycar was launched in Germany in 2017. It quickly gained traction in Europe and was launched in the UK in 2019. The mission? To quash the stigma associated with buying a new car and bring trust, transparency and peace of mind to the British used car market.

At the official launch event in London, CEO Mat Moakes went into more detail about heycar. He stressed that despite the enormous value of the British used car industry, consumers are left high and dry.

According to research carried out by heycar, buying a used car can be just as stressful as applying for a mortgage or deciding what city, town or neighbourhood to live in. “People still have this real inner fear of getting ripped off,” explains Moakes.

What’s the solution? Purpose-built for the auto industry, heycar is designed to solve these problems. It provides a streamlined alternative for used car dealers and buyers alike. Plus, if you hate websites cluttered with annoying adverts, you’re in luck. They’ve also committed to an ad-free website to boost consumer trust.

So, who are heycar? It’s pretty straightforward, really. A purpose-built platform designed to streamline the used car purchase process. Sounds good to us.

All about trust and transparency

So, who are heycar and why are they so big on trust and transparency? heycar throws around these words quite a lot. But what exactly do they mean? One of the company’s biggest USPs is an ad-free policy. Instead of charging dealers to list individual cars, the platform adopts a lead-generation model. This encourages dealers to list their best cars at fair prices.

What is heycar doing to support dealers? Unlike other competitor sites, dealers are invited to list as many cars as possible without an initial fee, so long as they meet the strict standards enforced by heycar. This model eliminates the anxiety of paying for a listing that might not generate leads. Instead, heycar only charges dealers when customers express interest in a listing. It’s basically matchmaking for the used-car industry.

Can I use finance to purchase a heycar vehicle?

Absolutely. As well as purchasing the car outright, you’ll see options for both Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) and Hire Purchase (HP) on heycar. Most cars listed on heycar are eligible for motor finance. Simply contact the dealer if you want to know more about your financial options.

Alternatively, you can use heycar as a search platform only and arrange finance with another provider. Whether you’re successful will ultimately depend on your personal borrowing history and the strength of your application. Fortunately, there are some fantastic car finance brokers – like My Car Credit – who can help to match you with the perfect lender for you. More on this and how My Car Credit can help later!

What about my existing car?

Already have a set of wheels and looking to upgrade? heycar offers a user-friendly ‘value my car’ service. You simply need to type in your car’s registration number and milage, and they’ll provide you with a free car valuation. There’s no need for an email sign-up and you’ll get your valuation right away.

heycar can provide valuations on everything from older cars to the latest used vehicles. Whether you’re planning to list your car privately or part-exchange it with a certified dealer, this tool is just one of the ways heycar aims to streamline the used-car shopping experience.

Is delivery included?

heycar unlocks access to used-car listings across the country. But what if you’re located in Bristol and the car of your dreams is in Manchester? The clever folks at heycar have you covered with an efficient and affordable delivery service. After you’ve settled your payment or arranged finance, heycar will deliver your car to your driveway in seven days or less. A friendly team member will give you a quick tour of your new ride, walk you through the paperwork and answer any questions you may have.

Heavyweights: The Best Selling Cars of All Time

back of a ford fiesta car best selling car of all time

From Aston Martins to Bentleys, everyone has their dream car, which got us to thinking: what do most of us Brits end up with? Here’s our lowdown on the best-selling models in the UK of all time*.

1. Ford Fiesta – 4.13 million+ sold

From first time drivers to OAPs, who has ever looked out of place behind the wheel of a Ford Fiesta in the UK? We seem to love this crowd-pleasing hatchback model. In fact, the British public has apparently accounted for the ownership of roughly a quarter of the Fiestas that have ever existed. Icon.

2. Ford Escort – 4 million+ sold

That’s right, Ford takes first and second on our most sold models list in the UK. Despite this car being discontinued over 15 years ago, it dominated two decades worth of the automotive market – totting up an impressive number of sales in the process.

3. Vauxhall Astra – 2.8 million+ sold

This was by far the closest Ford ever got to any serious sales competition. The original Vauxhall Astra has been one of the best-selling cars in the UK since 1979. Its forty-year existence makes it one of the longest-living cars still in production.

4. Ford Cortina – 2.5 million+ sold

For a staggering nine-year run from 1972 to 1981, the Ford Cortina was the best-selling car in the country. In 1979, it broke a British record by making 193,000 sales and in its final year of production in 1982 it was second only to its sibling model, the Ford Escort.

5. Vauxhall Corsa – 1.82 million+ sold

This is the dream model for every boy racer that’s just passed their test. The Vauxhall Corsa has always been a popular car in the UK but experienced the height of its success from 2002 to 2005 where it was the best-selling supermini for all four years and in the top three best-selling cars overall.

6. Vauxhall Cavalier – 1.81 million+ sold

The Cavalier is a master of disguise. This family car has had many versions, facelifts and modifications including an estate and a sports coupe version. This automotive chameleon was one of the best-selling cars of the early eighties and was pipped to the top spot only by the Ford Cortina in 1984 and 1985.

7. Volkswagen Golf – 1.8 million+ sold

The Volkswagen Golf might not be the highest-selling hatchback on the market but it certainly holds claim to being the best. The Golf has received multiple international awards over twenty years for being an affordable car with great automotive technology – winning ‘World Car of the Year’ once and ‘European Car of the Year’ twice.

8. Ford Focus – 1.7 million+ sold

The Ford Focus had pretty big shoes to fill when it first came on the market, replacing one of the best-selling Ford models in the UK of all time (the Escort). It didn’t disappoint. The Ford Focus was a favourite amongst mums for its space and the Ford Focus ST was a favourite amongst boy racers for its speed.

9. The Mini – 1.58 million+ sold

Yes, of course, the Mini is on the list. This car has been an icon for the UK automotive industry for more than 50 years. Although it’s ninth on this list, the Mini often features on the top of the greatest British cars polls and is widely considered as one of the most influential models of all time.

10. Rover Metro – 1.49 million+ sold

Intended to be a follow-up from the classic Mini, the Rover Metro became a popular car in its own right: during its early years, it even outsold the almighty Ford Fiesta! Princess Diana also famously owned one before her engagement to Prince Charles – talk about British car royalty!

Bluebird and Beyond: A History of the Land Speed Record

Bonneville Salt Flats where bluebird achieved land speed record

Humans have always been fascinated with going faster. In fact, we seem to associate speed with the advancement of mankind; the fastest vehicle on earth acting as a benchmark to where we’re collectively at. Among the most famous speed vehicles of them all were the Bluebirds.

From 1914 to 1964 the land speed record was dominated by the British. In that time, there were twenty-five records set, of which only two were set by teams outside of the UK. This impressive period of British domination was led by Malcolm Campbell. Campbell was the undisputed king of speed. He broke the record nine times over eleven years, taking the top speed from 146mph to 301mph. The vehicles that he used to make these records were all called ‘Bluebird’.

The name for Campbell’s cars was inspired by a play of the same name by Maurice Maeterlinck. Immediately after seeing the play, Campbell famously woke a paint shop owner in the night so he could purchase azure blue paint before racing at Brooklands the following day. Campbell named three cars this way that all broke the land speed record, increasing the top speed by over 200mph from the first version to the last. However, there would be another record-breaking Bluebird not driven by Malcolm Campbell.

In 1964, Malcolm Campbell’s son Donald followed in his footsteps by setting his own land speed record. Driving in his own vehicle named the Bluebird CN7, Campbell hit a record speed of 403.10mph which was to be the last land speed record set in a wheel-driven vehicle. Astonishingly, in the same year, Campbell also set the water speed record in the Bluebird K7. To this day he remains the only person to ever achieve this feat.

Following on from the Campbells’ reign as the fastest men on earth, the Americans took centre stage in the era of the turbojet engine. This new technology revolutionised the field and enabled previously unimaginable speeds to be reached. For almost a decade the Americans held every land speed record that was set, eventually reaching speeds of over 600mph.

For over a decade, no attempt got close to beating the record set by the Americans. Then the British teams made a comeback. Originally, a small overtake in the record was made by Andy Noble in 1983 – increasing the top speed by almost 3mph. However, Noble continued to direct land speed projects and returned fourteen years later with a new vehicle and a new driver, called Andy Green. In the space of a month, Green became the first person to register a speed over 700mph and the only person to drive a vehicle that broke the speed of sound, peaking at a top speed of 763.035mph. This record stands today, but with two projects currently working on breaking it, it might not stay that way for very long.
