Aesthetics

There’s no denying that the Hyundai i10 is pretty attractive for such a small car. Pointed headlights, a pinched grill and sporty-looking features on the higher-spec models all tick the boxes to make a surprisingly stylish small car.

Interiors

The dashboard and doors are a little plastic, but that’s the case with most small vehicles, and they don’t look too cheap. It helps that there are some interesting textured trims on the doors, as well as some swish additions for the N Line models (such as red stitching and rear privacy glass).

Hyundai offers both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, and the infotainment system is mounted high and has crystal clear graphics. This makes it easy to use and see – particularly compared to more fiddly competitors – and there are helpful buttons and knobs for safe navigation.

Just be aware that the steering wheel can’t be adjusted. There are height adjustments for the driver’s seat, however, and plenty of support and leg room (even for taller drivers).

Surprisingly for a such a small car, there’s also a decent amount of space. Four adults can sit comfortably in the space – but the middle seat is probably best saved for children. The boot is 252 litres, but the back seats do fold down should more space be required.

Performance and drive

The entry-level is a 67bhp three-cylinder petrol engine, which can feel a little laboured above 30mph, and certainly struggles beyond urban roads – particularly if you’ve got the automatic gearbox. It’s worth opting for the 84bhp, 1.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is both quieter, less prone to revving, and struggles less on faster roads.

The suspension is pretty firm, but still puts the i10 up there with the better small city cars. Where it really makes a difference is on winding country roads, as it helps to ensure the car doesn’t feel too lurching and unstable. Handling is also good, and there’s a tight turning circle and light steering, which is ideal for urban driving.

Safety

Hill Start Assist is offered as standard in the Hyundai i10, as well as automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, cruise control, six airbags, and forward collision warning. Premium trims can add an intelligent speed limit warning, too.

Design-wise, the Kona genuinely looks different from past models. Interior

Inside, the Hyundai Kona is about as contemporary as it gets – the rear has a ‘curveless seat bench’, which the brand positions as more modern and user-friendly than traditional rear seats, and the boot has been expanded. Practical features like a dual-screen display – much like in the brand’s Ioniq 5 – and a relocated gear shifter work to improve the overall driving experience. Plus, with 150mm more length and 25mm more width than the current Hyundai Kona, there’s also slightly more space for passengers (height remains the same).

Specification

Hyundai have kept quiet about engine specs for the Kona – we do know that it has been built as an electric vehicle first and foremost, but the model is also available in petrol and hybrid engines. The Hyundai Kona is the sister car of the Kia Niro, using the same ‘K3’ platform – as such, it can be expected to function to a similar degree.

The more affordable Kona is anticipated to house a 1.0litre turbo engine, averaging around 47MPG and producing around 120PS. The hybrid-electric (HEV) model, meanwhile, will have a 1.6litre petrol engine as well as an electric battery, averaging around 64MPG and 139PS. Expect the electric Kona to have a range of around 285 miles, and charge to 80% capacity in around 45 minutes with a rapid charger.

So, is the Hyundai Kona a good car?

More space, a genuinely eye-catching design, different engine choices, and an overall improved driver experience make the new Hyundai Kona a genuine contender in the competitive small SUV market.
