That said, the Volvo XC90 continues to deliver, and has done ever since the release of the first model way back in 2015. So, how much is the Volvo XC90, is it worth its price, and how does the car compare to its many rivals?

The Volvo XC90 – key features and stats

Performance and drive

Choose from four different engine options – a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid, two petrol engines, and a diesel. You’ll find a responsive automatic gearbox in each, as well as four-wheel drive. The diesel and petrol are all highly responsive, and even the hybrid is respectably fast.

Despite its size, the XC90 drives well in urban locations – you have good visibility thanks to the large windows, and fewer blind spots than competitors. You can also opt for features like a 360-degree camera and park assist system if you frequent tight spots.

The drive is a little noisier and bumpier than competitors in urban locations – particularly the diesel engine, which can rattle when idling and accelerating, but gets smoother on motorways. The grip is great on tight country roads, and handling is better than the Land Rover Discovery or Defender.

Safety

The Volvo XC90 is hard to beat when it comes to safety – it’s one of the best on the market. Automatic emergency city braking helps you to avoid collisions, and other features like active cruise control, lane assist, and automatic brake function all ensure maximum safety.

You can opt into features like a blind spot information system – designed to steer you away from oncoming traffic – and a rear collision mitigation system that automatically tightens seat belts if an impact is sensed. An optional pilot assist system can also take over acceleration, steering and braking for brief periods, too.

Interiors

Expect Swedish minimalism and style. The trim and finish on the dashboard and doors feel swish, particularly when you opt for higher-grade models. That said, even entry-level trim is excellent, with leather seats and mood lighting. Practical features aren’t sacrificed for style – for example, adjustable lumbar support makes finding a comfortable driving position easy.

A portrait, 9-inch infotainment screen reduces the need for multiple knobs and buttons, but can be a little fiddly when driving. The response time is also somewhat slower when calculating a route than those in either the Audi or BMW.

There’s a fairly reliable voice control system as standard, however. This responds well to commands like temperature changes and can help reduce the need for fiddling with the screen. However, whilst Apple CarPlay is now available as standard, Android Auto isn’t – you’ll have to pay a little extra.

Of course, there’s also the fact that the XC90 houses seven people. Seats in the middle row recline, fold and slide individually, and the rear seats can also be folded away. It’s a little cramped in the very back – children will be fine, adults less so – but it’s nonetheless impressively spacious. There’s also plenty of boot space, particularly if you remove these two rear seats.

Costs

If you find yourself wondering “how much is the Volvo XC90?”, it depends on what model you go for. As with all electric cars, the plug-in hybrid PHEV (known as the T8 Recharge) version costs more than the three alternative engines. The B5 diesel engine is comparatively economical, and overall, you’ll find the Volvo XC90 slightly cheaper than the BMW X5, but more expensive than either the Audi Q7 or Land Rover Discovery.

That said, the XC90 depreciates less than competitors, and it tends to be cheaper to insure and maintain, making it an ideal candidate for lower car finance deals. What are the New Number Plates for March 2023?

From March 1st 2023, all new vehicle registrations will feature the number ‘23’ on their number plates, replacing the previous ‘72’ plate which had arrived in September 2022.

These numbers are referred to as ‘age identifiers’, and are updated every six months. March marks the beginning of a new six-month period for the motoring industry, during which time new registration plates will be identified with the number ‘23’. From September 2023, these will update to ‘73’.

What do number plates mean?

As mentioned, new number plates are introduced every six months. They’re designed to indicate a vehicle’s age, as well as the location where the vehicle was registered.

The first two letters of a number plate indicate the region of the car’s registration.

The following two numbers represent exactly when the car was registered. Vehicles registered from March 2023 to September 2023 will have the number ’23’ at this point in their new plates. This age identifier updates every six months.

The final three letters in the number plate are randomly generated.

Why do you need a number plate?

Number plates indicate the age of a vehicle, as well as its first region of registration – as such, they are unique to each vehicle.

Beyond that, number plates are legally required by the DVLA. There are also specific rules around the font, font size, colour, and letter placement on number plates. Failure to follow these rules, or to display a numberplate in the first instance, can result in a hefty fine (up to £1000) – and the vehicle will fail its MOT.

We’re not surprised that the Kia EV6 won WhatCar? Car of the Year Award 2022. Somewhere between a hatchback and an SUV, the Kia E6 is a highly respectable electric vehicle that gives rival models a real run for their money. But with a high price tag, is the Kia EV6 worth it?
